Wine Areas

USA

Most states in the USA produce wine, though California is the main source of fine wine. The reason is the famous Californian climate. Only California's coast offers the sort of temperature climate that European grape varieties need. These grape varieties come from a different species of vine. Wines from native vines are pleasant but seldom offer the same quality.

California's main growing areas are the Napa and Sonoma Valleys and styles vary enormously. The cooler areas produce more elegant wines, the warmer areas richer ones. Outside California, good Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris is being made in cool Oregon, and intense reds and whites from Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and others in Washington State.

California grapes:

White

  • Chardonnay
  • Sauvignon Blanc ( Fume Blanc )

Red

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Merlot
  • Zinfandel
  • Pinot Noir
  • Syrah
