Spain

Spain's most famous wines are Rioja, from the hills in the north of the country, and sherry, the fortified wine from the rolling chalk uplands of Andalucia.

The wine we usually see outside Spain is white Albarino, made from the grape of the same name and tasting of apricots. In Ribera del Duero, they produces exceptionally good beefy reds; Toro is also red and gutsy and Rueda whites are some Spain's best dry whites.

Spain's cheap alternative to champagne is called Cava wines which are improving in quality. On the Mediterranean coast, Penedes makes good wines in all styles including international-style reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and whites from Chardonnay.

Spain's huge central plateau is mostly taken up with the wines of La Mancha. These have only recently started appearing abroad in large quantities, and have improved enormously.
