Wine Areas

South America

Foreigners may think of South America as being mostly tropical rainforest, but it is so vast that many countries have spots suitable for wine.

Chile is the main producer of quality wine at the moment, and every year the flavours get better. Argentina may in the long run have even greater potential. Brazil makes a lot of wine as well though not much exported, and even Peru boasts some vineyards.

Names to look for on Chilean labels:

  • Grapes include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.
  • The Central Valley is the main wine area and is subdivided into smaller areas.
  • Of these, Maipo makes excellent Cabernet, Curico good Chardonnay and Casablanca terrific Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Wines styles vary depending on climate, but are usually less juicy than Australian wines.

Top South American Wine Makers :

  • The wines of the Andes mountains have made Chile and Argentina standouts for theproduction of South American wines.
  • Not many people have experience with South American wines, so if you want to treat your palate to some standouts, try wines by the Cuvelier Los Andes Coleccion, Colome Malbec Estate, and Bodega Salentein.
