Wine Regions: Germany

Germany

Germany is a big country, but there are only few regions of it that makes wine. Most of the vineyards are centered on the Rhine of which the most important in terms of wine is the Mosel.

Germany's vineyards are divided into 13 different regions, and these regions will generally be mentioned by name of the wine label. Rheingau wines are nearly all white, but quite weighty and of good quality; but they are also pricy. Pfalz wines can be excellent, as can those of the Nahe, a tributary of the Rhine.

Some of Germany's best reds are found in Baden. It lies along the southern stretch of the Rhine, where the climate is considerably warmer. But their wines are not for export. The Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, by contrast, is very chilly. All are white wines, but as with the wines of the Mosel, when they are good they are superb.

East German wine Regions

There are also two wine regions located in East Germany. They're called Sachen and Saale-Unstrut, and while we're unlikely to see the wines outside Germany just yet, visitors to that part of Germany will certainly come across them.
