Eastern Europe
Privatization in Eastern Europe has meant great opportunities for
enterprising winemakers - but also great problems, because obtaining
supplies like bottles or corks can be difficult. Still there are many
worth trying.
- Hungary: look for wonderful sweet wines from Tokaj. The best of
the Eastern European states.
- Romania: erratic quality. The sweet Tamaioasa is excellent.
- Czech and Slovak Republics: good dry whites and some juicy reds.
- Slovenia: good quality, Branded Laski Rizling is by no means the
best Slovenia can do.
- CIS States: Moldova seems to have the most Western-friendly
wines, including good Cabernet Sauvignon.
Greece
In Greece there is more to Greek wine than Retsina. The reds here can be
very good, full of Mediterranean spice and herbs: look for Nemea and
Naoussa in particular. Chateau Carras is a single estate, the wines are
similar to red Bordeaux, but beefier, and are very good. There are some good sweet Muscats made, as well. Dry whites
are improving, but are seldom up to international standards.
