Bulgaria
Bulgaria has long been a source of good value reds, particularly from
Cabernet Sauvignon, but also for Merlot and blends of those with local
grapes like Mavrud or Gamza. The wines
continue to taste pretty good but privatization following the end of
Communism has led to patchy quality. Most of the wines are best while
they're young.
Bulgaria has never had much success with whites, and there doesn't
seem to be much improvement here. Most frankly best avoided unless you
can be sure the wine is fresh. Most seems to get stale in bottle before
it's even opened, or perhaps they bottled it that way.
Top Wine Makers in Bulgaria:
- Some of the best wine in Bulgaria comes from Todoroff, and from
Villa Lyubimets Winery.
- Kordopulova House is another great
contender, and if you’re in Bulgaria you should certainly arrange to
see the Kordopulova winery.
- Damianitza is another great Bulgarian
wine maker.
