Australia
The rise to international wine stardom of these two countries has
happened in a remarkably short space of time, but in fact both countries
have been making wine for over two hundred years . But the styles of
wine being made in each country now are very different from those first
wines.
Australia has developed a rich, ripe taste which is the archetype of
New World wine. The range of vines grown is narrower than in Europe,
with good whites being made mostly from Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon
Blanc and Riesling. The wines tend to be bigger and more generous than their
French or German counterparts, and are often aged in oak for even more
richness.
Nearly all the vineyards are near south coast, where it is cooler:
Reds focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz with Grenache and Pinot Noir
also popular. Again, these wines tend to have lots of upfront fruit and
supple spiciness.
